Wine from the Canary Islands: 2009 Los Bermejos Malvasia Seco Lanzarote

Hoyos
The surreal vineyards of Lanzarote, each vine protected from the elements in a Hoyos

Since 2001, Bodegas los Bermejos has been producing uncommonly beautiful white wines from what would seem an unlikely place: Lanzarote, the most easterly island of the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain and North Africa.

An extreme environment for agriculture, growers here have developed an unusual practice for protecting their fruit. Individual vines grow in shallow pits, hoyos, where the they are protected from the scorching winds and can trap precious rainfall.  From harsh beginnings, comes a fresh, youthful wine that is at one vibrant and gentle. Pale yellow with glints of green and lovely floral and spice notes on the nose. Medium bodied and dry, the palate shows juicy citrus, ripe peach and an underlying savory flavor.

Bodegas Bermejos takes great care to preserve the freshness and integral fruit character of this island white grape variety. An early harvest by hand, careful selection and long, cold maceration and fermentation in stainless steel ensures that the wine retains the same clean, floral essence as when the grapes first came off the vine.

The 2009 Los Bermejos Malvasia Seco is a beautiful pairing with a starter of fresh shellfish or sardines. Aromatic ingredients like saffron, thyme or cardamom bring out complexity and subtle spicy notes. The cuisine of the Canary Islands is a blend of Spanish, African and Latin influences and this Bermejos Mavasia would be perfect alongside a summer meal of grilled fish, sweet potato fries, and composed salad of avocado, red onion and orange.
