Dallas Restaurant: York Street (Lakewood)

A highlight of TEXSOM 2010: dinner at York Street restaurant in the Lakewood neighborhood of Dallas.

One of the highlights of TEXSOM 2010 was the wonderful dinner arranged for us at York Street restaurant with Bathalomew Broadbent. Broadbent, a leading importer of Ports, Madeiras and other fine wines, took the oppurtunity to showcase several of his selections but it was three vintages of Château Musar rouge that really made this evening special. That and chef Sharon Hage's extraordinary market-driven cooking making this one of the very best restaurants in the Lone Star state. This wasn't a very successful food photography night for me so I really can't recall every dish. Everything was served family style and there were several dishes being passed around the table at once. From what I remember, here's what we ate:

First Courses:

cucumbers and vinegar | pulped avocado | fired okra | compressed watermelon salad with arugula (dish of the night!) | chicken liver mousse

Soup:

lobster bisque (wonderful flavor)

Main Course:

pan roasted beef tenderloin

Cheese:

A selection of Texas cheeses (surprisingly delicious) and honey

Broadbent brought along with him the 1993 and 2002 Château Musar and the 1998 was ordered from York Street's wine list. I've been a fan of the wines since my days at NoMI where we maintained a vertical of the red Musar and my visit to the winery last December confirmed that these wines age in a wonderful way. On this night the 1993 was the most elegant and perfumed while the 2002 had a sweeter core of fruit than the other two vintages. All three of the Musar wines showed wonderful complexity and balance and were perfectly at home with the excellent food of York Street.

TEXSOM 2010 - Dallas, Texas

(download)
Hats off to fellow Master Sommeliers Drew Hendricks and James Tidwell for organizing and executing this weekend's AWESOME Texsom 2010 event in Dallas, Texas. Jeremy Parzen has already posted the details of Texsom 2010 on his excellent blog DO Bianchi and there were just too many great seminars, tastings, BBQ, and dry-aged steaks for me to write up individually. I am reserving a separate post for the superb dinner we had at York Street in Dallas with Bathalomew Broadbent featuring the wines of Château Musar. York Street is exactly the kind of market-driven cooking I love and Musar really sung on this night. Look for this post in the coming days. In the meantime, let me just say congratulations to Jason Huerta of Dallas' Pappas Bros and Steakhouse for winning the Best Sommelier in Texas competition (WELL DONE SIR!) and thanks again James and Drew for asking me to participate this year. Can't wait to get back to Texas!
